What Is Identity Theft?
Each of us is unique, with an
identity of our own. We carry our name with pride and express our esteem
for the reputation and accomplishments that precede us. When someone takes
credit for an achievement of our own making, it's annoying. It's possible
that it might have been a misunderstanding perceived by the coach,
teacher, parent or boss that initiated the problem not the person who
gained the praise. It's really hard to take when you see them take in all
the praises, not even for a moment attempting to share the credit. Though
irritated, you simply learn to accept that it's all a part of life, that
you simply have to move on. In the grand scheme of things, it simply
doesn't matter.
While you shrug at this minor foolishness, your attitude isn't likely to
be as relaxed over someone who has deliberately stolen your identity to
for his or her personal profit. This could be done by anyone and the
consequences of their actions maybe your own. Financial loss is often an
effect. This could taint your reputation socially, at work, in
circumstances where your good credit is needed, or in the unfortunate
event of criminal proceedings, which leave you with a record.
It could be made hard for you to just get on with everyday life; companies
servicing insurance loans and banking may feel you are a risk and decline
to do business with you. Or if they do, they may present tough terms.
Renting a home may be extremely difficult. If your problems resulted in a
criminal record, visiting a foreign country may not be possible. Bills for
hiring an identity theft lawyer may be steep, but it can be essential in
restoring your reputation.
Identity theft is a crime and you have become a victim. Regaining
your credibility may put a strain on your finances as well as cause
emotional distress. The process of putting your life back in order will
affect you at a very personal level because it's the future of your
reputation at stake.
It's difficult for those in a position of authority to conclude who is the
perpetrator and who is the thief. This is understandable in these cases
because both appear to be the same person. Even the person who stole your
identity has rights and is protected by the law. The identify thief may
not be treated as guilty before being proven otherwise. At times you may
even feel like you've the one under suspicion. You can expect this type of
frustration along with the timely strain the legal system imposes. The
time it will take to clear your records and the unfortunate damages
imposed will be likely to take several years.
